What Is the CDL Class B Test?

It’s important to understand what the CDL test is and how it works.

The CDL license is classified into three types:

  1. Class A
  2. Class B
  3. Class C

Class B includes vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds or vehicles that will tow another vehicle no more than 10,000 pounds in weight. Vehicles like straight trucks, large buses, segmented buses, and trucks belong to Class B.

To get your CDL Class B driver’s license, you need to:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Pass the eye checkup
  • Have a valid state license
  • Pass the General Knowledge test, Basic Skills test, Air Brakes test, Pre-trip inspection, and all other exams

The CDL test consists of two parts—the General Knowledge test and the Skills test. The general knowledge test includes seven subtests in total. Most people don’t take all of them—the number of tests you have to take depends on the endorsement and class you want. There are 50 questions, and you must get 80% of the answers right to pass. The knowledge test usually has an hour or an hour and a half time limit.

What Is the CDL Class C Test?

Class C is one of the three CDL categories. You need this license to operate a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or transport hazardous materials (HAZMAT), cargo classified as hazardous under federal law. If you obtain a Class C CDL and the proper endorsements, you can operate the next types of vehicles:

  1. Small HAZMAT vehicles
