Are There Transfer Restrictions?

Delta allows up to 150,000 miles to be transferred from a single account in any given year. It’s also possible to transfer miles to another person’s account. You’ll have to have their name and account number first.

When you transfer miles to another person, you can only do so in 1,000 mile increments, up to 4 people at a time. You can send a minimum of 1,000 and a maximum of 30,000 to any one person. You may also only do so if that person’s account has been opened for at least 10 days, and they have at least 1 mile currently earned.

A transfer to another person typically happens quickly, but it can take up to 24 hours.

Reasons You’d Want to Transfer

If you have lots of miles accumulated and don’t plan on traveling via plane for a while, you can transfer those miles instead. This allows you to gain access to the points system through Marriott or a similar company.

Say you plan on driving to another state instead of flying. You could benefit from a transfer since you get to use those points you now have on a hotel stay or to redeem for other rewards. The miles may have gone to waste, but the points can be used on numerous options.
