How to Contact Senator Menendez
Bob Menendez serves as the senior (longer standing) Senator for New Jersey. He received his degree in law from Rutgers University and served as the Mayor of Union City, New Jersey. He worked his way up from the state general assembly to the state senate, and then to the House of Representatives.
He has worked on the Student Non-Discrimination Act to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ students but originally voted for the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. He later came out against the bill. He feels strongly about gun control, and co-introduced the International Climate Accountability Act to create a strategic plan to combat climate change.
He is also an outspoken advocate for immigration reform and is a strong supporter of undocumented children’s rights. He has worked specifically to protect and create a path to citizenship for the children and widows of deceased US citizens who are in danger of deportation.
What Does Senator Menendez Work On?
The Senate, along with the House of Representatives, both makeup Congress, and work on creating policies and legislation for the whole country. When bills are presented to the House or Senate, they go through a rigorous process of amending and committee approval, before being returned to each body to be voted upon. They then go to the President, who may sign the bill into law, or return the bill to Congress with amendments or issues to be solved. However, if the President does not return the bill to Congress within ten days, it becomes automatically approved and becomes law.
Each senator takes part in many committees and smaller subcommittees, on which they have the most impact and input. To know which issues your senator can best deal with, make sure to look up their previous work about their committee assignments, and the roles they have on each. Senator Menendez will be most involved in issues about his committees. Senator Bob Menendez is involved in the following committees:
- Foreign Relations
