How To Avoid Paying the UNT Application Fee

Many universities in the United States charge high school graduates for applying. The highest fee in the country is $105 in the case of UC San Diego, but most are around $50. The purpose of the application fee is to cover the administrative costs of processing numerous applications that colleges receive every year. A number of universities don’t charge this fee, 16 of them in Texas.

The cost of applying to college can easily add up to hundreds of dollars, considering that graduates usually apply to multiple schools. Students should strategize and increase their chances of getting accepted by doing the following:

  • Applying for at least one college where you are likely to get accepted
  • Sending at least one “probable” college application
  • Including one or more schools you would prefer that are harder to get into

With tutoring costs and notoriously high tuition, added fees represent a burden for many students.

Is It Possible To Avoid Paying the Application Fee?

In most cases, yes. You can do this by applying for an application fee waiver that has to be approved by the university’s admission office. While the decision is discretionary, you can significantly increase the chances of receiving a waiver if you have:

  • SAT and/or ACT fee waivers
  • Financial difficulties and participate in government aid programs
  • Veteran status or active duty in the United States Armed Forces
  • Signed letter from your school counselor

Some universities don’t issue waivers for application fees. It’s important to always check with each university regarding the specific requirements for waivers.
