A Goldmine: Claim Your Standard or Visitor Oyster Card Refund Quickly

Promoted and managed by Transport for London, the Oyster card is a public transport payment method used in London and the surrounding areas. There are two types—the Standard Oyster and the Visitor Oyster card.

Since the contactless method was introduced, the Card lost its popularity, and Transport for London is now sitting on a gold mine worth over ₤400 million in unclaimed deposits and balances.

If you have an Oyster card lying around, don’t throw it away. Let us show you how to get a refund for it.

The Oyster Card Refund Policy

Transport for London has an exceptionally detailed refund policy, and it can take quite some time to get the hang of it. For more information about Oyster refunds, you can check the TfL’s Refunds and Replacements policy, but let us highlight when you should always claim a refund:

  • You don’t need your pay-as-you-go credit anymore
  • You are leaving London and don’t need your Visitor Oyster card any longer
  • You didn’t touch in and out and paid a maximum fare
  • You were billed on the wrong card, and you had to pay a maximum fare

Cases When You Can’t Get a Refund

You will not be eligible for a refund in case:

  • You traveled outside of zones covered by Travelcard
  • Your card doesn’t include Zone I, and you traveled in it
  • You claimed three maximum fare refunds in the same month

What Is the Time Window to Request an Oyster Card Refund?

In most cases, you have up to eight weeks from your journey to request a refund, though you should allow at least 48h following your journey to get an automatic refund.
