How to Claim the Fresh Express Recall

In late June 2021, Fresh Express recalled its bagged salads in several states due to a reported link between its products and a rising number of people infected with Cyclospora. The recall includes carrots, red cabbage, and iceberg lettuce. If you've bought one of these bags of mixed salads, how can you file a claim in the ?

The salads were sold at stores in several states, including the entirety of the northeast and some states to the west, totaling 31 states altogether. Stores such as Walmart, ALDI, Giant Eagle, Hy-Vee, Jewel Osco, and Shoprite sold the contaminated food under the Fresh Express brand, as well as repacked in-store-branded products.

To claim the recall, you can return the purchased product to the store you bought it from, or you can let DoNotPay help make the recall process faster, easier, and more successful.

How Do I Make a Claim for the Fresh Express Recall?

In order to make a claim for the Fresh Express recall, you must have bought the product within the affected dates. For the contaminated products, the best buy date on the package was recalled up to July 14th of 2021 and has a product code of Z178 or lower.

Making a claim seems like an easy process, but it's actually time-consuming. Going through your fridge, finding the receipt if you have it, and going to the store you bought it from can be such a hassle that you might be inclined not to do anything about it.

When you find out a product you purchased has been recalled, you need to do three things quickly:

  1. Search your fridge or pantry for the affected product and check the date and product code. See if it matches the one mentioned in the recall.
  2. Do not eat the food. This should go without saying. If your product has been contaminated, don't even open it. Viruses, parasites, and bacteria can be spread in many ways.
  3. Check the recall notice. Recall notices will often tell you exactly what to do, and most have one of two instructions: Return the product to the store you bought it from for a refund, and/or throw the food away, especially if you've already opened it.

If you threw the food away, it's unlikely that you'll receive a refund for your purchase. It's better to go to the store you purchased it from to make a claim, but often people just don't have time to do that. Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it to return the recalled item to a store, which is why an automated solution like DoNotPay can be so valuable.

What Happened With the Fresh Express Recall?

A number of Fresh Express mixed salad bags were recalled in 2021 due to potentially being contaminated by the Cyclospora parasite. The parasite sickened over 600 people in 11 states, but the contaminated salads were sold in 31 states.

The affected states were:

  • Arkansas
  • Delaware
  • Connecticut
  • Iowa
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Vermont
  • Wisconsin
  • West Virginia
  • Washington DC

The name brand product was recalled, as well as products sold under store brands such as:

  • Walmart Marketside
  • ALDI Little Salad Bar
  • Giant Eagle
  • Hy-Vee
  • Jewel-Osco Signature Farms
  • Shoprite Wholesome Pantry.

The Cyclospora parasite hasn't proved to be fatal in this case, but it's known to cause symptoms that include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and fatigue. It's definitely not an illness anyone wants to deal with.

Who is Eligible For the Fresh Express Recall?

Anyone in the above-mentioned states who purchased the contaminated salads is eligible for the recall. The contaminated mixed salad bags are marked by:

  • A product code beginning with Z178 or a lower number
  • The best buy date of July 14th or earlier

Do I Immediately Get a Refund if I Report My Product?

Not necessarily. Some companies will issue a replacement instead of a refund. It depends on what the recall notice says, and you almost definitely won't get a refund if you threw the product away or don't return it to the store you purchased it from.

It can be frustrating when you don't have the time to return it, or if you live a long distance away from the store you initially purchased the salad from. Don't worry, DoNotPay can make the process much simpler for you.
