Hoverboards are fun toys, but you should never continue to use one that’s under a recall! Even if a product doesn’t show signs of damage, you should have it inspected by a professional before something bad happens. The Amazon hoverboard recall is estimated to affect over 235,000 individual toys … many of which are owned by children!

Concerned consumers often have never handled a toy recall claim before and don’t know where to start. Recalls can happen for all types of everyday products, from microwaveable snacks to sunscreen. Take a deep breath: even if you can’t figure it out yourself, there’s always an easier solution.

What Happened With the Amazon Hoverboard Recall?

The hoverboards with GLW battery packs have been reported to overheat, producing smoke and small fires. Thankfully, the CSPC says that no injuries were reported at the time of the recall. The hoverboards can still function even with an overheated battery, so many consumers might not realize the product is defective.

Where Were the Hoverboards Sold?

Many of these hoverboards were sold at Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us between September 2016-2018. They were also carried by online storefronts like Amazon.com and Walmart.com, just to name a few.

How Do I Know if My Hoverboard is Affected?

The letters ‘GLW’ are visible on the defective battery packs on the underside of the hoverboard. The serial number below the barcode also starts with ‘GLW,’ followed by a string of numbers and other letters.

Pay attention to the product’s year, indicated by the 11th and 12th digits in the bar code. If it’s either a 16 or 17, it needs to be replaced.

Additionally, the defective hoverboards were sold in the following colors:

  • Red
  • Red monochrome
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Ocean Blue
  • Purple
  • White
  • Black
  • Black monochrome
  • Camouflage
  • Rose gold
  • Spectrum
  • Carbon
  • Galaxy

Steps to Take to Claim the Amazon Hoverboard Recall On Your Own?

The hoverboards in question were the Hovertrax 2.0 models manufactured by Razor from September 2016-August 2017. Only the ones outfitted with a GLW battery are suspected to have a potential defect. If you think that your product is damaged, here’s what you need to do.

Discontinue UseStop using the hoverboard immediately.
CallRazor customer support to report the situation. The phone number is 866-467-2967, and the line is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Pacific on weekdays.
Go onlineIf you prefer, you can also fill out Razor’s online contact form.
Make a ReturnOnce you’ve spoken to a representative, they will provide you with a prepaid shipping label to return the hoverboard’s battery pack.

Since live customer support hours are limited, it can be hard to squeeze a phone call into your busy schedule. Depending on the call volume, you may also get put on hold for several minutes, drawing out the process even more!

The online form is more convenient, but you also don’t know when the ticket will be opened. One Reddit user has reported that it can take support staff upwards of a week to respond to concerns.

Additionally, the online form states that Razor might share your personal information with the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission). If you would rather keep those details private, you have to give Razor a written notice within ten days.

Sometimes the prepaid shipping label can get lost in spam folders or be sent to the wrong email address. This isn’t uncommon, especially when using a different email address to contact support instead of the one used to buy the hoverboard. If you don’t have access to the original email address, you’ll have to go through the process all over again!
