How to Get Your Western Union Money Order Refund

Western Union is the largest global cash transfer service. It lets you send and receive funds domestically or internationally from over 200 countries and 500,000 sites in the Western Union network.

Request a Refund Over Email, Letter, or Fax if You Have Your Original Money Order or Receipt

You will need your original money order or receipt to complete this request.

  1. Fill out, sign, and date the tracing-refund request on the back side of the money order receipt, or simply complete the Money Order Customer Request form
  2. Submit these documents and the $15 non-refundable processing fee (payable to Western Union with a personal check or money order and sent to the address listed on the form) by:

Request a Refund Over Email, Letter, or Fax if You Don’t Have Your Original Money Order or Receipt

You should follow this procedure if you don’t have your original money order or receipt.

  1. Print out the Money Order Customer Request form
  2. Complete and sign the form
  3. Take the form to be notarized
  4. Submit it with all available documents* showing you as purchaser and the $30 USD non-refundable processing fee (to the address mentioned on the form) by:

If somebody stole the money order from you or you were the victim of a fraud, you will also have to attach a copy of the police report.

Bear in mind that processing can take as long as six to eight weeks, and Western Union cannot guarantee that you will be eligible for a refund.

*The documents that prove you are the purchaser could include:

  • The original store cash register receipt
  • Copies of other money orders or their receipts purchased at the same time
  • Bank statement showing the payment
  • Copies of other money orders purchased for the same purpose and same amount (i.e., rent or mortgage)

What Is the Western Union Money Order Refund Policy?

According to Western Union’s Terms and Conditions, and subject to the applicable law, transactions can be canceled for a refund of the full transfer amount, unless the funds have been picked up or deposited at the time when Western Union receives your written request.

  • For some services (excluding Western Union’s bill payment and prepaid products and services), the company may charge a transfer fee refund if funds are not available within the specified timeframe
  • Western Union might charge you a fee to refund the transfer amount back to you if the receiver rejects your funds

  • You can also request a check in the amount of the refund

Refund Policy for International Money Transfers

Under the applicable law, international transactions can be canceled for a full refund of the transfer amount (including the paid fees) within 30 minutes of making the payment, unless the funds have already been collected or deposited. You might also receive a full refund in certain circumstances if you prove that you’ve made an unintentional mistake.

What if You Suspect That You Were the Victim of a Western Union Money Order Fraud?

If you’ve transferred money and it hasn’t yet been picked up, you can stop the transaction and receive a full refund, including the transaction fee. Call the fraud hotline at 1-800-448-1492 to block the transaction as soon as possible.
