How to Cancel Your NBA League Pass Fast
Some would argue that NBA basketball, not baseball, is America's game. ESPN says that viewership was up significantly the first few games of the 2021-22 season, hitting an average of 1.44 million viewers in each game. What's more, adults 18-49 are watching 28% more, and women are tuning in 26% more often than last season. is a popular subscription service to watch the NBA, but you might be ready to cancel yours. DoNotPay is here to walk you through how to service.
What is an NBA League Pass?
Consumers sign up for NBA League Pass thinking that they can watch every game in the league live. The NBA owns League Pass, but the website doesn't exactly broadcast the fine print. That could make it more difficult to watch some games. DoNotPay explains why League Pass isn't such a great idea, and how you can cancel your subscription.
Because of the tangled web of streaming services, internet providers, cable TV companies, and blackout rules, subscribers can only watch "select" games live. The League Pass website does cop to the "blackout restrictions may apply" caveat on their website, on the page where they describe plans.
What Does "Blackout Rules May Apply" Really Mean?
"May apply" is NBA corporate speak for "you're not watching your home team play until after the game's over. And we know where you live." The NBA restricts broadcasting games in the zip codes that make up the regional markets for the 28 cities that are home to an NBA franchise; instead relying on regional sports networks (RSN) to televise the games live.
The good news is that if you're traveling, you can stream your home team's games live. The bad news? You'll have to subscribe to the RSN in your area to see games live—or watch it at the gym three days later.
Of course, the idea here is to sell out arenas, but the season is long, tickets are expensive, and games often end late. So even diehard fans would rather stay home sometimes.
The NBA as Big Brother
Your smart TV, tablet, phone, or computer tattles where you are when you log into your League Pass account. If your IP address and location services are within the lockout range, you're out of luck with your League Pass account.
Here's an example. If you live in the Bay area and can't live without your Steph Curry fix, you can't watch the Warriors on League Pass when you're home. You can catch them on RSNs, but that's another layer of subscriptions you'll have to pay for. If you live on the other side of the country, in Steph's hometown of Charlotte, you can see him sharpshoot in real time.
NBA TV Might Be a Better Option
Because the NBA is an organization never to miss an opportunity, they also have an official league channel, NBA TV. This package is not available with all streaming or cable carriers, and it's only included with "select" packages if your provider does offer the channel. If you're a real NBA fanatic and want access to all the games in real time, you need both League Pass and NBA TV.
