Cancel Dish Network With DoNotPay
Pay-TV subscribers number in the multiple millions. Not all subscribers opt to keep their service, however. If you are thinking about leaving Dish Network, you may be wondering how to contract without being assessed a ton in fees.
Why Are People Leaving Dish Network
According to the agreements page at the Dish Network website, customer satisfaction surveyor J.D. Power has ranked the company at #1 for four years in a row. If you think this means Dish Network keeps all of its customers happy, you would be wrong.
According to Statista, Dish Network lost at least 3 million paying customers between 2011 and 2020. A quick look at Complaints Board shows why former subscribers reveal troubles with the direct-broadcast satellite provider that range from poor customer service to overcharging to reducing channels to enacting 24-month contracts without permission. It leads them to subscriptions.
What Is Dish Network?
Headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, Dish Network was founded by Charlie Ergen under the name EchoStar Communications Company in 1980. In 1995, the company launched its first satellite and changed its name to DISH Network. Over the years, Dish Network has acquired numerous subsidiaries, including:
- Blockbuster
- Boost Mobile
- Dish Wireless
- Gen Mobile
- OnTech Smart Services
- Republic Wireless
- Sling Media
- Sling TV
- Ting Mobile
In the summer of 2021, MSN reported that Dish Network was planning to drop more than 100 channels, including all Sinclair broadcast stations due to failure to negotiate retransmission consent. Stations to be dropped by Dish Network include but are not limited to:
- ABC affiliate KAEF in Eureka, California
- ABC affiliate KATU in Portland, Oregon
- CBS affiliate KVAL in Eugene, Oregon
- CBS affiliate WGFL in Gainesville, Florida
- FOX affiliate KRXI in Reno, Nevada
- FOX affiliate WBFF in Baltimore, Maryland
- NBC affiliate KSNV in Las Vegas, Nevada
Canceling Can Be Costly
Even if you're not unhappy with Dish Network customer service, you may have discovered that you can stream as much content on YouTube for free. Unfortunately, canceling Dish Network is not always easy to do. Getting out of a contract with Dish Network can cost you a pretty penny.
Subscribers should be aware that it's nearly impossible to cancel a Dish Network contract before it expires without being charged an exorbitant Early Termination Fee (ETF), explains BillFixers. The fee is $20 per month left on the subscription, and Dish Network has no official exceptions.
How to Know if You Will Be Charged for Early Contract Termination
Even if you did not knowingly sign a two-year contract with Dish Network, you may have one nonetheless. BillFixers says you can find out by looking at your bill. If you see something like "eAutoPay Savings 3 of 24," you're in a two-year contract that will be expensive to get out of.
BillFixers also notes that there are two ways you may be able to avoid those pesky and expensive cancellation fees. If you are canceling Dish Network because you're moving, you may convince the new resident to take over the remainder of your contract.
You can also try switching to a provider such as a Spectrum that will buy out your ETF for $500 in exchange for signing up with them.
How to Cancel Dish Network by Yourself
Dish Network does not offer a way to cancel online, and they have a limited number of brick-and-mortar locations. They do, however, have a dedicated "Retention Department" you can call at 855-782-7086.
According to BillFixers, the company changes its customer service numbers rather regularly, but if you call you will eventually be connected with someone in retention.
Stay as calm as you can because the retention agent on the other end of the line can make things easy or difficult for you. Expect a sales pitch designed to keep you as a customer, so be prepared to plead your case well in advance of the call.
Generally, the agent will tell you how to return your satellite dish and other equipment. Write down everything they tell you, and follow instructions carefully. Send your gear via UPS and get a tracking number to prove your return. Otherwise, you will be charged for very expensive equipment.
