Retrieve Your Unclaimed Money in Louisiana the Easy Way

Have you ever thought about starting a treasure hunt? Unclaimed money may not always be a chest filled with gold and jewels, but you might find out you are entitled to a significant amount of funds you forgot about long ago.

In April 2020, the Department of Treasury in Louisiana had more than $880 million in unclaimed property and has returned around $595 million so far. Despite numerous initiatives led by the state, the number of abandoned assets—such as paychecks, uncollected insurance policies, or safe deposit box items—keeps growing.

If you still haven’t checked whether some of your forgotten funds hide in the treasury of the state of Louisiana, it’s time to learn how to obtain what’s yours.

Defining Unclaimed Money

Unclaimed money involves all tangible and intangible assets that go to the government because their original owners didn’t manage to claim them. Such funds usually come from financial or business organizations that need to report unclaimed money if they cannot get in touch with the rightful owners for a long time.

A certain period—called the dormancy period—needs to pass before the state can pronounce the funds abandoned. In Louisiana, the government considers money unclaimed after five years of lying dormant.

The state doesn’t become the owner of the money but keeps it until the person to whom the funds belong files a claim.

What Counts as Unclaimed Money?

The number of the possible forms of unclaimed funds is huge—you can see the examples in the table that follows:

Why Does Louisiana Money Get Lost?

The major reason why people fail to claim the funds that belong to them is that they are unaware of the existence of such properties. They usually forget about small amounts left in bank accounts or, in cases of inheritance, at times they don’t even know that they are someone’s heirs.

Funds also go unclaimed if the person changes their name, address, or contact details, as the holders and previous employers cannot contact them to arrange the payment. Such situations may happen when the owner gets married, moves house, or changes their name for any other reason.

Certain people remember the funds they left behind, but they have a different problem—they don’t know how to retrieve them or to whom they should speak. The search-and-claim procedure may seem like a complicated task, but there are several ways to do it with no stress and get satisfying results.

The Best Way To Find Unclaimed Money in Louisiana on Your Own

To avoid trouble and make sure you are checking the right records, you can use Louisiana’s Department of Treasury online database.

You can also search through FindMyFunds.com or the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), but these websites might be too wide for your needs. Using the Louisiana-only database will narrow down the search and help you find what you are looking for more easily.

How To Find Unclaimed Money in Louisiana on the Official Treasury Website

Here’s what you need to do to track down your unclaimed funds online and file a claim to retrieve them:

  1. Go to the official treasury website
  2. Tap on Claiming Property and select Search Unclaimed Properties from the drop-down menu
  3. Enter the required details and press Search
  4. Click on Claim for each property that belongs to you and go to View Claimed Properties
  5. Choose the claimant relationship from the drop-down menu and click on File Claim
  6. Fill in the electronic form with the required details, such as your address, full name, and Social Security number, and go to Next
  7. Confirm that all the information is accurate and submit the claim

A confirmation email should come to your mailbox as soon as you complete the last step. It includes the list of all documents you have to send to the treasury and the unique claim ID number.

The last step of the claim procedure is submitting the required documents to prove that you are the original owner of the goods. You can do this by selecting the Upload Claim Documentation tab and adding up to five clear scans of your paperwork to the claim.

You will need to enter your claim ID number to finalize the process, so don’t discard that confirmation email too soon. Once the whole claim process is over, the state will need up to three months to process your information.
