Get Your Furry Friend a Pet License In Charlotte-Mecklenburg

Bringing home a new pet is an exciting life milestone. You have made sure to pick up all the necessary food and supplies. Perhaps you have even set up the first vet visit. However, you may not realize that the majority of states in the US require you to have a pet license.

One of the first things you should do after bringing home a new pet is to research pet registration in your city or county. This guide will walk you through the process for getting a pet license in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, and we'll show you how DoNotPay's pet licensing product can help.

Reasons To Get Your Pet Licensed

Besides being required by law, there are many benefits to having a pet license. Pet licensing is an easy and inexpensive way to make it easier to find your pet if they get lost. It also ensures that they are properly spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Additionally, your license fees help support local animal shelters.

All cats, dogs, and ferrets over four months old require a pet license in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and surrounding areas.

How Do I Get My Pet License?

If you live in Charlotte, Mint Hill, Pineville, or any unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County, you must license your pet with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Licensing. The process can be somewhat of a hassle and, aside from their license fees, very little helpful information is included on their website.

Currently, you have these options to file for a pet license:

  • Online Application - The online application for a pet license can be completed by creating an account with PetData, a third-party company that the City of Charlotte uses to manage its animal licensing department. You will need to give them your personal information and upload a few documents, including a current rabies certificate to complete the application online. There is a $2 transaction fee in addition to the regular licensing fees.
  • Apply by Mail - The animal control department also allows you to return the application by mail, but this option requires that you have access to a printer. You must then fill out and mail the application manually. Because mail tends to be a slower option, this could result in late fees, particularly if you are renewing an existing pet license.

How Much Does It Cost To License a Pet In Charlotte-Mecklenburg

Fortunately, it is relatively inexpensive to apply for a pet license. The licensing fees for an animal license in Charlotte-Mecklenburg are as follows:

  1. Licenses for unaltered animals (pets that have yet to be spayed or neutered) are $30 for a one-year license. The cost is higher for unaltered animals than it is for fixed animals to promote sterilization and reduce animal overpopulation. If your pet is unaltered for obedience or confirmation show reasons, you will be required to provide proof of participation in at least three nationally recognized shows.
  2. Spayed/neutered pets have two license options: $10 for a one-year license or $25 for a three-year license.
  3. If you are a senior over 62 years old, you can license your pets for free.

After obtaining your first pet license, you are required to renew that license every one or three years, depending on which option you have paid for. A pet license that is 30 days past its renewal date will receive a $10 late fee. Additionally, if you lose your pet license tag, a replacement tag can be requested for a $2 fee.
