How To Label Letters the Right Way

To address a letter properly, you need to include:

  1. The return address in the top-left corner on the front of the envelope (write your name, street address, number of house or apartment, city, state, and ZIP code in no more than three lines)
  2. The mailing address in the center of the envelope
  3. One or multiple stamps in the upper right corner

Format the mailing address like this:

Can You Mail a Letter Without a Return Address?

If you go to the post office to send mail, the clerk will insist that you write the return address. To avoid including your address, you can place the envelope in your or the USPS mailbox, and the mail carrier will pick it up.

While you can send a letter with a mailing address only, that’s not the best choice. The envelope should contain the return address in case your letter can’t be delivered and needs to be returned to you.

Another advantage of writing the return address is that your letter will be faster to sort and deliver. Machines handle mailpieces and scan both the return and the mailing address to affix a barcode and make the process quicker.

If your envelope doesn’t contain the return address, the machines won’t be able to sort it, and it will end up in a separate bin. The letter will stay there until one of the workers has the time to sort it. This means that your letter will take longer to reach its destination.

What Happens to Undelivered Mail Without Return Address?

Undelivered letters with no return address are sent to the Mail Recovery Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and destroyed or recycled.

Mailpieces that contain valuable items are held in the Mail Recovery Center for some time. If no one claims them, the items get auctioned.

To avoid having your letter destroyed, you should consider writing at least your surname and ZIP code, if not the entire address. In that way, the recipient won’t know your address, but the letter will be returned to you in case it can’t be delivered.

Another option is to pay for a separate P.O. box and use it as the return address on your letters.

How Many Stamps Should You Affix?

When determining how many stamps to place on the envelope, you should take the postage price into account. You can calculate the cost of mailing by opening an online postage price calculator and entering the following info:

  • Mail class
  • The envelope’s:
    • Weight
    • Height
    • Length
    • Thickness
  • Destination

Mailing a standard 4x6 First Class Mail letter that weighs one ounce currently costs $0.55, which means that you need only one Forever stamp. If your letter is heavier, you have to affix more stamps. For example, a two-ounce letter requires one Forever stamp and one Additional Ounce stamp since the postage price is $0.75.

You can always ask a post office clerk to tell you how many stamps you need to purchase if you don’t feel like doing the math.
