In some cases, monthly banking fees can be waived without any extra work on your part. If you're over 65, standard monthly checking fees will not apply to your account. Minors are not required to pay maintenance fees on savings accounts.

If you don't qualify for an automatic exemption, you can still easily avoid bank fees. Sometimes, all you need is a certain amount of money in your account.

ATM Fees

To avoid these fees, take these steps:

  1. Use ATMs that are owned by US Bank.
  2. Maintain a Student Checking account (which provides four free ATM transactions from different banks each statement period).
  3. Maintain a Gold Checking account (two non-US Bank transactions each statement period).
  4. Maintain a Platinum Checking account (unlimited non-US Bank transactions).

Monthly Maintenance Fees

The requirements for waiving monthly fees vary based on your account type:

  1. For Easy Checking, you need an average minimum balance of $1,500 or monthly direct deposits of $1,000 or more.
  2. For Gold Checking, you need to have an open US Bank personal loan, credit card, line of credit, or mortgage.

  4. For Standard Savings, you need to collect $1,000 per month or have a ledger balance of at least $300 each day.
  5. For Elite Money Market Savings, you must maintain a minimum balance of $10,000.

Overdraft Fees

Overdraft fees can be automatically waived if you have Overdraft Protection. This opt-in service costs $12.50 for a standard checking account and $7.50 for a Gold Savings account. Platinum Savings accounts are not subject to any overdraft fees.
