  1. Minecraft account
  2. Mojang account
  3. Microsoft account

Minecraft Accounts

In the first versions of Minecraft, players logged in to Minecraft and its website with a username. This account type no longer exists. Users who created these accounts before November 2012 migrated to Mojang accounts or had their accounts deleted in February 2015 unless they had paid or premium Minecraft accounts or purchased a gift code.

If you purchased a copy of Minecraft and want to deactivate your old account, you have to migrate your account to a Mojang account here before it can be deactivated.

Mojang Accounts

The Java Edition purchased between November 2012 to December 2020 had an associated Mojang account created if the user did not already have one. To delete your Minecraft account, you have to send Minecraft to support the transaction ID from your purchase confirmation email.

If you are considering deactivating your account instead of doing a deletion, note that deactivated accounts cannot

  1. Log into Mojang Studios services
  2. Register a new account with the same email address as the deactivated account
  3. Change an existing account's username to the username associated with the deactivated account
  4. Change an existing account's email address to the email address associated with the deactivated account

You can deactivate your account from the account settings page. If you would like to retrieve a deactivated account, DoNotPay may help with our Unban My Account service.

Microsoft Accounts

If you play a Bedrock version of Minecraft, you may use a Microsoft account to log in. If you have forgotten your login credentials for Microsoft, you can reset your password, but you will have to wait 60 days before deleting your account. DoNotPay can also help with this process by retrieving your account password. Before you delete your account, you should

  • Save your files and data
  • Cancel any subscriptions associated with your Microsoft account
  • Provide alternate methods of reaching you to any necessary contacts
  • Use any money associated with your account

Once your account is ready for deletion, you can read through Microsoft's requirements for closing, provide a reason for closing the account, and mark the account for closure. You may be asked for proof of identity to complete the account closure. You have 60 days after asking Microsoft to delete your account before you lose access. If you log in again during those 60 days, your account will not be deleted.

If you link a Minecraft account to a Microsoft account, it cannot be unlinked. If you recently purchased a copy of Minecraft and need to change the Microsoft account you linked to, under Minecraft's refund policy, you have 15 days after purchase to request a refund.
