How to Apply for Maternity Leave at Northrop Grumman?

Here, you’ll learn about , its qualifications, and how to apply for it.

Maternity leaves and family leaves are common benefits many employees in most affluent countries readily enjoy. However, this common benefit has not seemed to catch on in the US as it has in other developed countries.

The US has the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), but it does not cover all employees in all situations.

Many employees are left without benefits when they go to take time off to help a gravely ill family member, tend to a family emergency, or welcome a new child into their family. Many employees must try to decide if they can take unpaid time off, or if they have to quit their job in order to be there for their families.

Unfortunately, the US hasn't been able to pass a comprehensive law that ensures that all employees are entitled to family or maternity leave when they need it. But such benefits would undoubtedly be a help to many Americans who are looking to support their families and take time off when they need it the most.

Now, let’s learn more about .

What Maternity Benefits Are Northrop Grumman Employees Receiving?

The federal program failed Family Medical and Leave Act (FMLA) is a nation-wide program that requires full-time employers to give their employees off additional time to care for a seriously ill family member or to welcome a child into their family. The program will cover some employees from Northrop Grumman who are full-time and have been with the company for a certain period of time.

If you meet the following criteria, then you are eligible for FMLA leave, which allows you more time above and beyond what your company offers in order to care for an ailing loved one or to welcome a new child into your family:

  1. Work for a covered employer
  2. 1250 hours worked during the 12 months prior to the start of the leave.
  3. Working at a company with 50 or more employees working or within 75 miles of it
  4. Worked for the employer for 12 months prior to taking leave.

Northrop Grumman does participate in the federal FMLA program and offers some maternity leave benefits of their own (described above). Their policies are described by their employees as "fair and standard to the industry".

For What Reasons Does Federal FMLA Allow Me to Take Time Off?

Federal FMLA time can generally be taken to either care for loved ones or to welcome a new child into your family. The reasons for time off are semi-flexible whether you are having a baby, adopting a child, or receiving a child from the foster care system. You can also take the time to care for ill loved ones within your immediate family (i.e. mother, father, spouse, child, etc.)

FMLA covers these reasons for time off:

  • The birth of a child and those who care for a newborn child within one year of birth
  • The placement of a child for adoption or foster care by the employee within the last year
  • To care for the employee's spouse, parent, or child with a serious illness
  • A serious health condition that leaves them unable to perform essential functions of their jobs
  • Any qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that the employee's spouse, son, daughter, or parent is a covered military member on "covered active duty

If you have questions about whether your reason is covered or not, visit your HR department or talk to your supervisor at Northrop Grumman for more information. Be sure to notify your employer ahead of time if you will need to take extended time off to tend to an ailing family member to welcome a child into your family.
