The Best Way to Get Cheap Dental Care in Chattanooga

If you are uninsured, the best way to get a is to see if you are eligible for Medicaid in Tennessee. The state Medicaid offering is called TennCare and is accepted at many clinics that accept private insurance. There are clinics in the state that exclusively cover the TennCare and uninsured population.

Who Is Eligible for TennCare

TennCare covers many sections of the Tennessee population. In other states, there is a single income threshold that determines eligibility for all Medicaid populations, but with TennCare, the income limits vary by program. TennCare covers the following groups of people:

  • Pregnant Women - Pregnant women at or under 195% of the federal poverty line are eligible for TennCare.
  • Newborns - If a child is born to a woman covered by TennCare, they are automatically covered for a year. When the child turns one, they are then evaluated for eligibility on their own.
  • Children - TennCare covers low-income dentist services for children up to age 19. The income limit decreases as children age, starting at 195% of the federal poverty level for children under one, dropping to 142% at age one, and again to 133% at age six. Orthodontic services are not covered under dental services with exceptions for handicapping malocclusions, which interfere with dental function and speech.
  • TennCare Standard - This group covers children under 19 who may not meet the income requirements to be covered as part of the "Children" population. The income limit for this group is 211% of the federal poverty level ($36,757 for a family of two). The child must not have access to insurance through a family member's employer.
  • Parents and Caretakers - If you are the caretaker for a child under the age of 18, you may be covered by TennCare if you are low-income. The income limits are slightly over 120% of the federal poverty level ($15,948 for a family of two).
  • Breast or Cervical Cancer - If you are under age 65, uninsured, or not covered for treatment of breast or cervical cancer, and have been determined by the county health department to need treatment, you may be eligible for this program. Your income must be at or under 250% of the federal poverty level.

Programs With Resource Limits

Some groups have asset limits in addition to income limits. The value of any property in the applicant's name is included in this total. The table below shows the groups with their corresponding resource limits.
