Low-Cost Dentistry Options in Miami

If you are looking for a free or low-cost dental clinic in Miami, you will have more options available to you if you are enrolled in Medicaid. Some clinics serve the uninsured and clinics where dentists volunteer their time to those not covered by government benefits.

Apply for Medicaid

All Medicaid enrollees are signed up for a dental plan, which covers most services for those under 21. Emergency dental services are covered for those over 21, which by default excludes cleanings, x-rays, and fillings. If you are over 21, you may have expanded coverage to cover these services with prior approval from your dental provider. To be eligible for Medicaid, you must be

  • Uninsured or underinsured
  • A US citizen or alien
  • Below the income threshold - For a family of 2 (one parent and one child), the annual income limit is $23,169. For each additional family member, the limit increases by $6,038.

In addition to the income limit, you must also meet one of these conditions:

  • Be pregnant
  • Be responsible for a child under 19
  • Be 65 or older
  • Have a disability
  • Have someone in the family with a disability

You can apply online or with a paper form that can be mailed, faxed, or returned in person to the nearest Customer Service center. Once you are enrolled in Medicaid, there are three ways to enroll in a dental plan:

  1. Over the phone with an agent by calling 1-877-711-3662 Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 8 pm and Friday 8 am to 7 pm
  2. Through the automated phone system at 1-877-711-3662 at any time
  3. Online through the Florida Medicaid Member Portal

You should have the Florida Medicaid or Gold Card Number and birth year for every person you are enrolling. You may also need a PIN if you received a letter. If you do not have this information, you can get it by contacting your local Department of Children and Families office.

Options for the Uninsured

If you need something in the immediate vicinity, Caring for Miami offers services to the community to improve access to food, healthcare, and education. One of their programs is Project Smile, providing free comprehensive dental care to low-income uninsured community members. They even run mobile dental clinics to reach members of local organizations. To ask about their services, you can call the office at (786) 430-1051.

You also have options through statewide networks. Project Dentists Care is a program started by the Florida Dental Association in 1993. Association members give their time to one of the many clinics participating in the program so that residents who are not eligible for government coverage can have access to dental care. The United Way also funds the Healthy Foster Kids Program through the Family Resource Center of South Florida, though this program only covers children in foster care.
