How to Cancel a Venmo Payment

What do you do when you discover that you have inadvertently made a payment to someone that you did not intend to? What if you made some other error that is causing you to need to cancel your Venmo payment ASAP? Some people might jump into full-on panic mode because they are afraid that they have made some grave error that could cost them financially.

You might get yourself worked up because you think that you are not going to have any opportunity to reverse what you have put in motion, but you should try to avoid thinking like that.

DoNotPay can help you get out of the mistake that you have made, and that error is likely not nearly as dire as you have made it out to be in your mind. There are ways that it can be corrected.

Venmo States There Is No Way to Cancel a Payment

One of the scariest things to read if you need to cancel a Venmo payment is that there is no way to do so. That is exactly what Venmo says on their own website. However, they also follow this up by saying that you retain the option to ask that person to send the payment back to you. It might not be a direct cancellation of the Venmo payment, but it is one way for everyone to end up back to even on their money again.

If you get in touch with Venmo and they say that they are unable to reverse your payment, you can:

  1. Ask the recipient to send the money back
  2. Open a case with DoNotPay to push harder on this initial denial.

Venmo Will Reverse a Payment at the Recipient’s Request

The only time that Venmo will get involved to reverse a payment is when the recipient requests for them to do this. They will NOT do so if only the sender asks them to. There are certain stipulations that must be met for the Venmo team to consider reversing a payment even at the recipient's request. Those include:

  • The Venmo account must be in good standing
  • The recipient must give direct permission to Venmo to do so
  • The recipient must still have the funds in their Venmo account

While it is possible to go through all of these steps to cancel a Venmo payment, most people consider it to be a lot easier to simply request that the individual who received the money simply pay it back. That brings everyone back to even, and most people prefer to do it this way rather than deal with all of the hassles that come with reversing payments back and forth through the official Venmo channels. The one exception to this may be if you have an incredibly large sum of money that you need to get back through to your Venmo account. If that is the case, then you can perhaps go through the company to do what you need to do.
