Which Crimes Can I File Online?

Not all police reports can be filed online, but some can. You can file an online police report if the crime is about:

Vehicle burglary or tamperingTo file a police report online for vehicle burglary, the property must have been stolen from the vehicle and you'll need to be able to adequately describe the property and vehicle. For tampering reports, you'll need to show that the vehicle was tampered with.
Harassing callsTo file a police report online for harassing calls, like someone hanging up or heavy breathing, you'll need to describe the frequency of the calls. However, if you have any idea of who the caller is, you shouldn't use online filing. Also, if your caller ID gives you the phone number of the caller, you shouldn't use online filing.
Vandalism/graffitiTo file a police report online for vandalism/graffiti, you'll need to show that the original property (either public or private) has been changed, modified, or defaced.
TheftTo file a police report online for theft, the property has to be taken without your permission, but you likely don't know who did it. Property, in this context, can be intangible and includes identity theft.
Lost propertyTo file a police report online for lost property, you don't really see that it was stolen, but you don't know where it is either. For example, maybe you left your jacket at the ball game. You went back and you can't find it, nor do any employees have any reports of it.

In all of these cases, the crime is not ongoing, there are no injuries, and it is not an emergency. If you're sure you know who the suspect is, filing an online police report is not a viable option. You'll need to file in person or over the phone.

Other Options for Filing a Police Report in New Jersey

You've got two other options:

  • In-Person: Here, you'll go into the local police department. Or, you can call and ask an officer to come to you. In either case, you'll have to wait for an officer. Your report is given in person and in real-time. Depending on circumstances that you won't be able to control, this could be a lengthy process.
  • By Phone: Here, you call the non-emergency number for the local police department and give your report to someone over the phone. While it's still slow, it's faster than the in-person method.

These options give you more of a personal feel while filing your police report and many people do prefer that. However, you should know that both can be incredibly time consuming and you don't necessarily know if what you said was fully understood. Chances are it would be, but some people would prefer to write down information themselves. After you've experienced a crime, either as a victim or witness, you want to be sure it's all right.
