How to Find and Take Advantage of Electric Lawn Mower Rebate Programs

Some jurisdictions are now offering rebate programs designed to encourage homeowners to switch from gas-powered to. There are also rebate programs being set up by power and utility companies. These rebates vary in amount and in what you need to do to claim them.

Often, these rebates can be quite valuable, but even finding out that they exist can be a challenge. DoNotPay can help with these rebates, as well as with rebate programs from Menards, Home Depot, Goodyear, Michelin, Verizon, Macy’s, and more.

Why Do Local Governments and Utility Companies Offer Electric Lawn Mower Rebates?

are a form of social engineering, wherein local or state governments and/or utility companies try to incentivize consumers to switch to electric.

Programs such as Mass Save are intended to help the environment and save people money.

Government rebates can be seen as a form of negative taxation; giving you back some of the money you have paid in taxes so that you will do the desired action.

Unlike manufacturers, such as car companies, that might offer rebates to encourage customer loyalty or even in the hope that you will never get around to claiming it, they want you to claim these rebates. However, this does not mean the process is always easy.

How To Find Electric Lawn Mower Rebates in Your Area

Electric lawnmower rebates are typically available in specific geographic areas. Your area may or may not have a program, but there are two places to look:

Local and regional governmentsFor example, the City of Bowie, Maryland, offers a $50 rebate with proof of purchase of a mulching, electric, or manual reel mower. Unfortunately, the city requires that you collect the rebate in person at City Hall.

Some of these programs require that you prove you have scrapped (not resold) a gasoline-powered mower. A good place to look is air pollution control districts.

Utility companiesThey also often offer rebates to their customers. These are often limited to customers, and you should check your utility company's website to see if they offer anything.

You could also try searching for an electric lawn mower rebate + your city.

How Do These Rebates Work?

There are two main ways in which these types of rebates work:

  • You buy the new lawnmower and then send in (or drop by with) required documentation. Typically, they want proof of purchase, proof that the lawnmower is, in fact, electric, and proof of residency in the area the rebate applies to. Utility companies may have an online portal customers can log in to claim these rebates. In some cases, you may also need to provide a note proving you have scrapped your old gas mower.
  • You take a gas-powered lawnmower to recycling and receive a coupon that gives you that amount off of a new electric lawnmower from a participating vendor.

In either case, you have to take extra steps. You won't be able to collect these rebates automatically. In addition to finding available rebates, you have to read their website and work out what to do.

Typically, only people residing in the jurisdiction in which the rebate is being offered or customers of the utility company are eligible. The website will tell you precisely who can claim the rebate, how often you can claim it, and what you need to do. For example, for the City of Bowie rebate detailed above, you need to:

  1. Purchase an eligible lawnmower, which includes electric.
  2. Take the receipt to the Finance Department at City Hall, 15901 Excalibur Road, Bowie, MD. If the receipt does not specify the type of lawnmower, you will need to also take some other documentation, such as the manual, that does. (It doesn't say whether they will accept photos of the mower). Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm (not convenient for many people).
  3. Take proof of city residency. You must be a resident of the actual City of Bowie, meaning you pay property taxes to the City of Bowie. This might mean your ID with your address, your last property tax bill, etc.

In this case, you can see that many people might decide the $50 is not worth the effort of taking time off work and driving into town. Other programs are a bit easier, but they are still often arcane and have requirements that are highly annoying.
