How to Claim the Toyota Recall

As it turns out, there are a number of listed on the Toyota website. So the first step is to figure out whether your Toyota has been recalled for any reason. It may not be possible for you to look into each and every individual recall. So the best thing is to go to Toyota's safety recall and service campaigns lookup page and enter your license plate number or VIN (vehicle identification number).

Looking up a recall by the VIN

  • The VIN should be on the insurance identification card issued by your car insurance company.
  • It's also on the registration card issued by the DMV.
  • It's also on a metal plate on your dashboard.
  • It's on a label on the driver's side door jamb.

Once you've entered the license plate number or VIN, the lookup page will look through all the current recalls to figure out whether your car is eligible. You can call your local dealer or make an appointment through the Toyota website to get the defective part replaced or repaired for free.

Current Active Toyota Recalls

As of now, there are a number of active Toyota recalls for which you can make a claim.

Takata Airbag Safety RecallA car's airbags are arguably its most important safety feature, given that they inflate during a crash and provide cushioning for the occupant's faces/upper bodies. However, there are certain defective Takata airbags in which the inflator might explode at impact and sharp metal fragments might shoot out at the person sitting behind it.

So there's a large safety recall out for cars containing certain Takata airbags. In fact, this is the largest recall in automotive history and 19 car manufacturers are part of it.

If you suspect that your Toyota has a defective airbag (or if you just want to check), you can enter your license plate number or VIN on Toyota's Takata airbag safety recall page. If your car is eligible, you can arrange to have your airbags replaced in about an hour, for free. Toyota may also arrange for your car to be picked up for repair.

If your vehicle doesn't show up in the list of vehicles eligible for a free airbag replacement, you can keep checking the website because more vehicles are added as time goes on.

Sienna vehicle seat belt recallToyota has also announced a seat belt recall for certain Sienna vehicles. These vehicles have 8 seats, but it turns out that the seat belts in the second row were incorrectly manufactured and might tear during a crash.

This is a smaller recall, involving only 2,300 vehicles. Toyota will themselves get in touch with the vehicle owners by January 2022, but you can also go on their website and enter your license plate number or VIN to figure out whether your vehicle is involved in the recall. Toyota will replace defective seat belts free of charge.

Camry power brake assist recallThis recall applies to certain Camry vehicles produced in 2018-2019. The problem with these vehicles is that the power brake assist could suddenly stop working (though the non-power-assisted braking will continue to work). This is more likely to lead to a crash.

About 227,400 vehicles were affected by this braking issue. Toyota has started a recall in which it will inspect the vacuum pump and repair/replace it as necessary, at no cost to the owner of the vehicle. If you suspect that your Camry might be among those vehicles which have a defective power brake assist, enter your license plate number or VIN into Toyota's website to find out.

The above are only three examples of Toyota recalls that are currently going on, but there are many more listed on the website. If you suspect that any part of your Toyota may be defective, you can go on the website and do some research to find out if it is eligible for a recall. This will help you to maintain peace of mind and possibly protect the health and wellbeing of your loved ones.
