Who Is Eligible to Get a Fishing License?

For the most part, just about anyone in Miami Dade can get a fishing license for either freshwater or saltwater fishing. Licenses are required for anyone 8-years-old and up. Different licenses are available in increments of a single year upwards of multiple years for different prices. Additionally, non-residents can purchase licenses for shorter increments (as low as three days at a time) or annual licenses.

All fishing in Miami Dade requires a license, but a few days out of each year are designated as free fishing days. On these days, you won't need a license to fish. The days are as follows:

  • The first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in April and the second consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June are freshwater fishing.
  • The first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June, the first Saturday in September, and the Saturday following Thanksgiving for saltwater fishing.

Miami Dade offers a variety of fishing licenses. While various commercial options, tournament licenses, private pond permits, and the like exist, the two most relevant licenses are the saltwater and freshwater licenses. As the names suggest, these licenses allow you to fish in saltwater or freshwater bodies. Licenses exist that cover both and options like snook and lobster catching.

Additionally, lifetime options exist for each of these. These can be purchased separately, together, and even with the addition of a lifetime hunting license.
