Request Section 8 from Broward County Housing Authority

Everyone deserves the right to affordable, clean, and safe housing. Unfortunately, access to decent housing is sometimes out of the reach of some individuals and families. To help families combat housing insecurity, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) created a federal housing assistance program, called the Housing Choice Voucher Program. This program is also commonly referred to as Section 8 or HUD Housing.

If you are looking for assistance with Section 8 housing through the , DoNotPay is here to help you start the process.

Who Is Eligible for Section 8?

The ) participates in the Housing Choice Voucher Program and provides more than 6,000 households with monthly housing assistance. This assistance is provided in the form of vouchers and allows renters to find decent housing in the private market. They pay a portion of the rent, based on their income, and the rest is covered by the voucher. Landlords must agree to accept Section 8 Vouchers and abide by the requirements set forth for them.

Eligibility criteria are set by HUD, but applications are accepted and reviewed by your local public housing authority, which will determine eligibility.

General requirements include:

  1. Being a U.S. citizen (or a specific category of non-citizens)
  2. Family income cannot exceed 50% of the median income for the county or metropolitan area where the family chooses to live.
  • Family income is based on annual gross income and includes all eligible family members
  • Broward County's median income for 2020 was $60,922, according to U.S. Census Bureau
  1. Applicants must provide Broward County Housing Authority with family assets, income, and other pertinent information
  2. Applicants must consent to the verification of information through banks, employers, and other institutions and agencies

Local housing authorities have the ability to determine their own "preferences," which helps prioritize waitlists. In Broward County, those priorities include the elderly and disabled. This means that if a Section 8 applicant meets the requirements of being elderly or disabled, they may be prioritized ahead of others on the waitlist.

  2. There are no printed pre-applications, but the online application is available in English and Spanish
