How to Easily Claim Volvo Recalls
Volvo is a highly-respected car manufacturer that's served the public loyally for decades. But, as we know, best-laid plans don't always go smoothly. Volvo has been under the microscope -- as has many a vehicle producer -- for productions that fall well below their standards. This initiates a recall, a process that can be alarming, frustrating, and confusing. To simplify matters, here's how to claim Volvo recalls.
Between 2016 and 2019, car manufacturers recalled over 200 million autos for a myriad of reasons. And it's reported only two-thirds of recalls actually get repaired. A third of recall claims aren't completed over a year after a recall is first issued. Why? Well, cars change hands. Automakers lose track. But, more so, consumers aren't aware they're driving a car with a poor track record.
At the end of 2014, an estimated 50 million cars were on the recall list that was still on the road. A tenth of those had changed ownership. One automaker recalled 27 million cars that same year.
That consumers don't know they are behind the wheel of a defective vehicle is a serious threat. Somehow, they are missing the emails and notices responsible manufacturers send out. Cars are exchanging hands, and either the buyer or seller seems aware of any vehicular issues. No one's bothering to do focused background checks on a vehicle.
A defect can be as easily fixed as windshield wiper assemblies not working to major infractions such as malfunctioning airbags or tires blowing. The defect can be a nuisance or lead to significant harm. This is why recalls are so important. But how do you even know there's a recall?
DoNotPay can find out.
What Happened With the Volvo Recalls?
Volvo is currently recalling their S60 sedans that came off the assembly line between 2001 and 2009 and S80s from 2001 to 2006. The matter deals with the driver's side airbag. If deployed, the airbag could rupture, shooting metal fragments at occupants.
The NHTSA believes humidity levels play a part, causing the airbag to decay and develop dust particles. So, if ignited, there's more surface to burn. That increases the airbag's force and causes the inflator to fracture. That releases metal shard projectiles.
As weather appears to play a part, the recall's focused on certain regions of the U.S., but anyone driving around in one of those sedans should check out the Volvo airbag recall.
Who is Eligible for the Volvo Recall?
Anyone who owns or operates the aforementioned S60 or S80 is eligible for the recall.
If your Volvo got released in 1999 or later, you can check to see if there are any open recalls. Go to the NHTSA or Volvo site. They have recall information, and you can search by entering your VIN.
How Do I Make Claim Volvo Recalls on My Own?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ("NHTSA") enforces vehicle performance through local and state governments partnerships. The agency's mission is to minimize injuries, deaths, and economic losses that result from motor vehicles.
Should you discover your Volvo is on a recall list, your priority is getting the claim in and seeing what your options are. By law, the vehicle manufacturer has three options for correcting the matter.
| Replacement | If the matter isn't fixable, the manufacturer can give you a new or similar model. |
| Repair | The manufacturer uses its network of dealerships and shops to repair the defect at no cost to car owners. |
| Refund | Taking into account a reasonable depreciation, the car producer has the option to refund the vehicle's purchase price. |
If your vehicle's on a safety recall list, reach out to the dealership where you bought the car, the manufacturer, or the service center ASAP. You can also contact the NHTSA, calling them at either 888.327.4236 or 800.424.9393 to get info or register a complaint.
A complaint requires the Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire so that the agency's technical staff can investigate. You'll find it on the website.
Consumers have to be aware that recalls come with a statute of limitations. That entails the amount of time you have to take advantage of the recall benefits. The timing is often complex and can involve factors like when the manufacturer issued the notice and how serious the defect is. If you miss the statute, the argument might be there's no legitimate reason for you not to know about the recall.
When filing a claim, the information needed will include make, model, year, and VIN.
