How to Apply for Veterans Benefits for Assisted Living

There are so many veterans’ benefits available and so many variations in each type of benefit that it can be hard to figure out which one you are eligible for. Even when it comes to helping with living and medical tasks, there are three options: nursing homes, assisted living, and home health care. Out of these, how do you decide if you are eligible for veterans benefits for assisted living and apply for them?

There are three requirements when it comes to getting assisted living benefits.

  1. You have to be signed up for VA health care.
  2. The US Department for Veterans Affairs decides that you need this service as part of your treatment and personal care.
  3. The service is available near you.

Read on to decide whether assisted living is the right choice for you and your needs.

What Are the Long Term Care Options for Veterans?

As mentioned above, there are three options when it comes to long-term care for veterans.

Nursing HomesThis is the option to choose if you need medical care around the clock. You may need to have a nurse or a doctor on call 24 hours because of the extent of your service-related disability. Plus, you might need help with daily activities such as bathing and getting dressed. A nursing home will be able to assist you in all these areas.
Assisted LivingIf you're a veteran who needs help with daily activities such as bathing and getting dressed, but you don't need medical care all the time, then you can go with the veterans’ benefits for assisted living. Generally, in assisted living, the veteran gets their own room and a caregiver comes in to help them with tasks which they can't do by themselves. A health professional might also come in as and when needed but will not be there all the time.
Home Health CareWe all feel most comfortable in our own homes. What if you're a veteran who needs help with the activities of daily living and also needs medical care from time to time, but you prefer to live in your own home? In that case, it might be possible to get home health care via your veterans’ benefits.

What Services Are Available in Assisted Living?

If you've understood the options available to you and you're leaning towards the assisted living option, you might be wondering what it's like. What kind of services will they give you? Will you enjoy living in one of these homes? Here are some of the services provided in an assisted living center:

  • Hygiene: If needed, you can have a caregiver help you with bathing, dressing, and going to the toilet, depending on your level of mobility.
  • Housekeeping: Your laundry will be taken care of by the assisted living facility, as will the cleaning of your room.
  • Meal Preparation: This is available in some assisted living facilities but not others.
  • Medical Assistance: In the assisted living facility, you'll have reminders to take your medication at the appropriate times as well as further medical assistance as needed.
  • Recreation: An assisted living center can be fun to live in as you'll be surrounded by other veterans/seniors, and recreational and social activities will be arranged for you.

Keep in mind that the US Department for Veterans Affairs doesn't pay the rent on the room of your assisted living facility but can help to defray some of the other costs of living there.

How Do You Apply for Veterans Benefits for Assisted Living?

The first step in availing yourself of these benefits is applying for VA healthcare with VA form 10-10EZ. You have the option of applying online, by phone, by mail, and in-person for these benefits. You'll also need to have the following on hand:

  • Your social security number, as well as those of your spouse and dependents.
  • Your military discharge papers.
  • Your insurance information, if any insurance company is currently covering you.
  • Your gross household income from the previous year, which includes your own income as well as the incomes of your spouse and dependents.
  • Your deductible expenses in the last calendar year.

Once you apply for VA healthcare, they'll make a decision about your case in about a week. But in order to get assisted living, you'll also need to apply for Aid and Attendance benefits or a Housebound Allowance. This will require a different form i.e. VA form 21-2680. You'll also need a letter from a doctor which confirms that you need help with household tasks and/or medical help.
