Visiting an Inmate at “Upstate”

Here’s everything you need to know.

  1. New York Department of Corrections is one of the few prison systems that does not mandate a visitor's application.
  2. Visitors must present a government-issued photo ID.
  3. Minors must have a birth certificate as a form of ID.
  4. All visitors are required to sign and agree to all the visitation rules.
  5. It is very likely that visitors will be searched, which can include an Ion scanner.
  6. NYDOC enforces a strict dress code for visitors. It is recommended that visitors don't wear any work uniforms and dress conservatively.
  7. Consider bringing an extra set of clothes should you unintentionally violate the dress code.
  8. Visiting hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm. However, the first letter of an inmate's last name will dictate when you can visit. You can see the up-to-date visitation schedule on the prison's website.
