How to Request Your Swedish Medical Records
If you have ever been a patient at Swedish hospital in Seattle, you may want to get a copy of your medical records. According to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), you have the right to obtain your —and your records from any hospital where you've been treated. This is your right, protected by law, and you deserve to receive those records promptly when you ask for them.
It's a simple process that can turn frustrating. You have to do your research and figure out where and how to make the request, and you may have to follow up with the hospital if you don't hear from them quickly. In a health emergency, that can be dangerous (which is another reason why you might want to request them now, just to have them on hand).
DoNotPay can request your electronic health records on your behalf. It's fast and easy, and it takes the guesswork out of this essential task. Whether you're working with Mercy, Kaiser, Cleveland Clinic, Baptist, or any other hospital, our process works the same way. Learn more about how to request your medical records.
Do You Really Need Your Medical Records?
Yes, more often than you'd think! In most circumstances, hospitals aren't required to keep those records forever, and if it's been a long time since you've visited that particular facility, you may want to get a copy of your records before they're destroyed. You'll also want a copy on hand for your family and power of attorney in the event of a medical emergency. If you switch doctors, you'll want to give your new health care provider your complete health history so they know what treatments and procedures you've been through in the past.

According to Washington law (RCW 70.02.080), the hospital must provide your records within 15 days of receiving the request. There is no law about how long your medical records are kept by the hospital, but the State of Washington Medical Quality Assurance Commission outlines specific guidelines for retaining records, which includes a minimum of 10 years under typical circumstances.
