Need to Reach Out to a Loved One at Sussex Correctional Institution?

Georgetown, Delaware, is the home to Sussex Correctional Institution (SCI), an all-male facility that houses roughly 1,200 inmates. It has custody levels that range from minimum to maximum security, as well as the Youthful Criminal Offenders Program. It also has a treatment program for substance abuse disorder called KEY, which offers a therapeutic approach to fighting addiction.

If you have a friend or loved one at SCI, there are a few ways you can reach out to them. For the safety of the inmates and visitors alike, there are strict rules you'll have to follow.  Here's what you need to know, and how DoNotPay can help.

How to Contact an Inmate at Sussex Correctional Institution

There are a few ways you can reach out to someone at SCI, but there are some important things to know first. Each correctional institution has its own rules about visits, phone calls, and mail, and knowing what they are will make it easier for you to make contact.

At the time of writing, inmate visitation is suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This can change at any time, however, so it's good to know the rules for visitation so you're prepared for when it eventually becomes available again.

  •  You must have an approved visiting application on file before you can visit an inmate. This application can only be received by request from an inmate.
  • Once you are approved, you must schedule your visit at least a week in advance by calling (302)-856-5545.
  • Visitation times are Monday through Saturday, from 9 AM to 3 PM or 4:30 PM to 11 PM.
  • Visitors must report 30 minutes before their scheduled visiting time to ensure they are admitted.
  • The full list of visitation rules can be found at https://doc.delaware.gov/views/visit_inmate.blade.shtml

If you want to write a prisoner, letters, cards, non-Polaroid pictures, and money orders can be sent by mail. Here's how you should address a letter to an inmate.

Do not mail inmates packages, cash, pornography, tobacco, stamps, or illegal substances. Failure to follow any of the rules when writing letters to inmates will ensure that your loved one never receives their mail.

Phone Calls

It isn't possible for you to call an inmate, but SCI has a system in place to enable them to make collect calls to you. Delaware's Department of Corrections has a contract with GTL's ConnectNetwork.

In order to get a call from an inmate, you must set up a prepaid phone account with them by either calling 1-866-230-7761 or by visiting their website. Once you're connected, follow these steps:

  1. Select the facility you wish to contact.
  2. Provide the following information: Inmate ID, your phone number, and your basic contact information.
  3. You will receive a confirmation email. Click on the link to verify your account.
  4. Make a deposit or payment by clicking on "Make a Deposit" or "Add Funds."
  5. Choose the dollar amount and payment method to add money to the services that are available to you.

You must be on the inmate's approved calling list, and calls will be monitored and recorded. Inmates are allowed limited, specific times for phone calls.
