In the past, it was possible to visit the clerk recorder's office and request your marriage certificate copy in person. This cost $17 if you were paying by cash or check and $19.50 if you were paying by debit or credit card. Now, you cannot walk in and request a certificate, but you can drop an application in the dropbox. Just make sure that you pay by check or money order, instead of cash.
Requesting Your Marriage Certificate Online
To request your marriage certificate online, you must be prepared to pay $24. In addition to paying the county $17 for the copy of your marriage certificate, you also must pay a non-refundable $7 to VitalChek for the convenience of making an online purchase. Here are the steps you must take to make your request online:
- Fill out the online form on VitalChek's website
- Pay through VitalChek's online payment system with a valid debit or credit card
- Print the form you get from VitalChek and take it somewhere to be notarized
- Email or fax the notarized form to the clerk recorder's office
If you opt to email your notarized form, you should send it to clerkrecorder@rec.sccgov.org. Also, keep in mind that this method takes around one week to process.
