A marriage license is a document that allows you to get married, while a marriage certificate is a  document that proves that you got married on your wedding day and in the county, the ceremony was held. Before getting married, you and your partner have to fill out some paperwork, present identification, and sign some forms before you can be issued a marriage license. In the state of Florida, you and your partner will need to do the following to apply for a marriage license:

  1. Present a picture ID (driver's license, passport, etc.)
  2. Give a social security number
  3. Pay a marriage license fee

It currently costs $93.50 to get a marriage license, but you can get some of the fees reduced if you complete a Florida state-approved pre-marital course. Your marriage license is also valid for 60 days, meaning you must get married within 60 days of it being issued, or it will expire. You may also have to wait three days after it is issued to get married.
