What Is a Lien?
A lien is a legal claim against assets that is put in place to satisfy an unpaid debt. Tax liens are among the most prevalent, but other kinds of liens exist:
- Bank liens
- Car title liens
- Civil judgment liens
- Criminal judgment liens
- Mechanics liens
- Real estate liens
When a creditor or agency secures a lien against an asset, it may be the first step toward obtaining a levy and seizing and selling the property. Once a creditor files notice of foreclosure or repossession, you are well on your way to losing your belongings.
What Is a NMAC Lien?
Similar to a mortgage, an NMAC lien remains in place until you pay off your loan in full. As Credit Karma explains, NMAC auto leases are available with terms from two to five years, and purchase loans can range from one to six years. Additionally, there are no penalties assessed for paying off an NMAC auto loan early.
What Happens If I Don't Pay the Lien?
Not only can a lien do great damage to your credit reputation, such a legal claim can lead to loss of your car, house, or other property. If a lien is not paid off, the creditor may exercise their right to seize and sell the property.
How to Know if There is an NMAC Lien on Your Vehicle
Credit Karma notes three ways to determine whether a lien is in place:
- Visit your state DMV and search for the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN
- Carefully examine the car title
- Get a history report from Carfax or the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System
How to Find Your Vehicle Identification Number
This all-important number can be found on your registration papers and insurance documents. You can also find the number on the vehicle itself, typically on the lower left side of the windshield or inside the hood. The VIN may also be displayed on the engine or inside the driver-side door.
How Will I Know if the NMAC Lien is Released?
Once your car loan is paid in full, Nissan should release the lien within 20 days of clearance of your final payment, says Nissan Finance who goes on to explain that titles held electronically by your state may take up to six weeks to be sent via snail mail.
How to Demand NMAC Lien Release on Your Own
The simplest way to remove a lien is to pay the amount in full. You can do this online. If you do not yet have a registered online account at Nissan Finance, make one.
Once you have an account, log in and select the account from the drop-down menu options.
