All You Need to Know About Mississippi Veterans Benefits

Military Protection All You Need to Know About Mississippi Veterans Benefits

How to Find and Access Your Mississippi Veterans Benefits

As a veteran, you are entitled to benefits and protection. It is not always easy to access them or, indeed, to even know everything you might be eligible for. However, your Mississippi veterans benefits are yours.

Trying to work this out yourself may result in you leaving benefits you are entitled to on the table, or worse, being denied and having to go through a complicated appeal process because you missed some key fact. Many people know that veterans are eligible for pensionshealth insurance, and certain education benefits, but what about affordable home loans? Assisted living support? Benefits for disabled veterans? Death and burial benefits?

Do you know everything you deserve? DoNotPay can help.

Benefits for Veterans in Mississippi

Veterans in Mississippi have access to a number of benefits. First of all, you can access various federal benefits, which include VA medical care, home loan guarantees, counseling, etc.

However, some of the Mississippi veterans benefits include:

  • No income tax on military retirement pay, disability benefits, or survivor benefits.
  • For veterans with a service-connected, total disability and an honorable discharge, or their surviving spouses, exemption from property taxes (called Ad Valorem in Mississippi).
  • For veterans who have been residents in Mississippi for two years or who were residents in Mississippi prior to entering active duty, low-interest loans up to $400,000 for them or their unmarried surviving spouse.
  • A 5 point preference for state jobs, with a 10 point preference for disabled benefits.
  • Free hunting or fishing licenses for disabled veterans.
  • Exemption from concealed weapon permit fees for disabled veterans who have lived in the state for at least 12 months or have a valid permit from another state.
  • Free burial in one of Mississippi's two veterans' cemeteries (fees are charged for spouses and dependent children).

If you (or a family member) are eligible for these benefits, they can be challenging to obtain. Also, military benefits tend to change frequently and it can be hard to keep up.

How to Find and Access Veterans Benefits in Mississippi on Your Own

Given the variety of benefits available and the complexity of each one, it is a lot of work to access these benefits on your own.

However, you absolutely can do it on your own. Here are some examples:

Claiming Income Tax Benefit

The Missouri Department of Revenue is decidedly unhelpful (retirement pay is not even included in their FAQ). It appears that doing so is a matter of ensuring it is reported correctly on your return.

Claiming the Property Tax Exemption

To claim the property tax exemption, you have to prove a total, service-related disability, and honorable discharge. There are two ways to do this:

  1. Get your doctor to document and explain the connection, which is the most common way. This can be a challenge. Often, the system is rigged against you.
  2. Demonstrate that you had continuous symptoms between your service and your diagnosis, but this is only available for a few conditions.

You will need to provide this proof to your county, and working out how to do so is a pain.

Getting an Affordable Home Loan

In order to be eligible for a low-cost home loan through the Mississippi Veterans' Home Purchase Board you must:

Step 1Have an honorable discharge.
Step 2Get a Certificate of Eligibility for a VA loan. You do this by:

  • getting a copy of your discharge or separation papers.
  • applying for the CoE either online through the VA's site, through your lender (certain lenders only), or by mail to the Department of Veterans Affairs, St. Petersburg Regional Loan Center, 9500 Bay Pines Blvd, St. Petersburg, FL 33744.
Step 3Find an eligible property. This must be a single-family residence in the state of Mississippi, valued up to $400,000. Mobile homes, townhomes, and condos are not eligible.
Step 4Apply online, or request a loan package by calling 601-567-4800, emailing, or mailing a written request to Veterans Home Purchase Board, PO Box 54411, Pearl, MS 39288-4411.

You will be required to pay a $68.00 credit report fee. Also, if you have an existing home, you must sell it before closing on the loan.

Next Steps for Accessing Veterans Benefits in Mississippi if You Can’t Do It Yourself

If you can't manage any of the things above or access other veterans’ benefits, you will need help. This might mean.

  • Calling a tax professional to help with income tax exemption or property tax exemption.
  • Involving a lawyer, particularly if you are having issues with disability benefits.
  • Seeking professional help from a realtor or broker with your home loan.

In all of these cases, you are going to be spending a good amount of money and while you may eventually get it back, many veterans are not flush with cash.
