Life is full of deadlines, and unfortunately, you can't leave all of them at the office. The good news is that you don't even have to leave your house to get things done. If your Maryland vehicle registration is set to expire soon, DoNotPay can help you get your registration renewed in just a few minutes.

How to Renew Your Registration in Maryland

Renewal notices are mailed 60 days before your registration expires. There are five ways to renew your vehicle registration in Maryland :

  1. In-person
  2. By mail
  3. By phone
  4. At an eMVA kiosk
  5. Online

Renewing in Person

You can only renew in person at an MVA office if there is a hold on your registration, such as an unpaid parking ticket or an insurance violation. You will need your renewal notice and proof of insurance. Cash, checks, and the following credit cards are accepted:

  1. Visa
  2. Mastercard
  3. American Express
  4. Discover

You can also renew in person through your county treasurer's office or a title service agent that has been accredited by the MVA for an additional service fee.

Renewing by Mail

When you receive your notice, check to see if the insurance portion is complete. If it is blank, you will need to provide the information. Mail your completed notice to MVA, Mail-In Renewal Unit, 6601 Ritchie Highway N.E., Glen Burnie, MD 21062. Checks and money orders are accepted. If you send a check, be sure it has your phone number and driver's license number on it. The MVA must receive your renewal materials at least 15 days before your current registration expires, so be sure to send them far enough in advance.

Renewing by Phone

Registration renewals can be completed by phone if all the information on your renewal notice is complete and correct. You can call 1-410-768-7000 and pay with a credit card. You should receive your new registration within ten days.

Renewing at an eMVA Kiosk

Kiosks are available at MVA branches, allowing you to skip the line. To renew at an eMVA kiosk, you will need your renewal notice and insurance information. Credit cards and checks can be used as payment at the kiosks. You will receive your new registration and sticker when your transaction is complete.

Renewing Online

If the information on your renewal notice is complete and correct, you can renew online. You will need your title and license plate number. Once your transaction is complete, you can print a temporary registration that is valid for the next 15 days. This can be used while your permanent registration is in the mail.

If there is a hold on your registration, you may be able to resolve it online. If you clear your violations, there may be a delay of up to five business days between your payments and when the information is sent to the MVA. Once the MVA is notified, you will be able to renew your registration using the method of your choice.

Vehicle Registration Fees

Registrations are valid for two years. Passenger vehicle registration fees start at $135. If you have a year or more left on your registration and you need to cancel it, you can request a refund of the fees. You will need to send a copy of your registration and the cancellation receipt. If you have less than a year, you can still request a refund if you return your registration sticker unused. Your refund will be mailed to you within six weeks. If you lose your registration card, you can get a replacement for a $5 fee.
