Louisiana State Penitentiary is the largest maximum-security prison farm in the United States. With over 6,300 inmates, the prison has earned the nickname, ' a gated community.'  In addition, the 18,000 acres of land where the prison sits was previously a farm that had many working African slaves from Angola. Therefore, the prison is also referred to as The Angola Plantation, Angola, or the Farm.

The facility houses both males and females and is managed by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. Established in 1901, the facility has continued to be self-sufficient by cultivating its food and products.

Locating an inmate in the facility is not an easy task. However, DoNotPay provides you with an uncomplicated method to help you connect with an inmate at Louisiana State Penitentiary.

How Can I Contact an Inmate at Louisiana State Penitentiary?

There are three main ways that you can use to contact an inmate at the facility.

Visit an Inmate at the Facility

Inquire from the inmate if you are on the approved list of visitors before visiting the prison. Visiting days are from Friday to Sunday, from 6:00 am to 4:15 pm. However, if a month has five Sundays, you'll only be allowed to visit an inmate on the last Friday preceding the fifth Sunday.

All visitors above the age of 15 will be required to submit a picture Identification Card (ID). They include:

  • State-issued driver's license
  • State-issued ID
  • School ID (high school, college, or university)
  • Military or law enforcement ID
  • Passport

Visitors without a means of transport to the facility are picked and must arrive at the designated stopovers before 2:00 pm. Those with their own means of transport are thoroughly searched on arrival at the facility for contraband and other prohibited items. In addition, the visitors' areas are designed to create a family atmosphere; therefore, you're expected to behave and dress accordingly.

Contact an Inmate via Telephone

Inmates at the facility have access to a phone during assigned times. However, the calls are closely monitored. All inmates making outgoing calls should use Securus Technology as it's the recognized telephone service provider in the institution.

You should register with Securus Technology to use their services. There are three account options you can choose from. These are:

  1. AdvancedConnect - The prepaid calling account allows you to receive collect calls from an inmate. The charges get automatically deducted from the prepaid account. You will continue to receive collect calls as long as the account has funds.
  2. Direct Bill - Securus Correctional Billing Services (SCBS) directly bills you every month after receiving collect calls. To ensure that you continue communicating with an inmate, pay the bill on time.
  3. Inmate Debit - The inmate funds their account and can call anyone on their approved call list. After requesting the commissary, funds are transferred to the inmate's account from the facility trust.

Send a Letter to an Inmate

Sending mails to an inmate can lift their spirits. However, because a third party reads the letter's contents for security purposes, you're advised to share general information about each other's lives.

The facility has strict rules regarding sending letters at Louisiana State Penitentiary. When sending a letter, ensure that the letter meets the following:

  • Includes the inmate's full name and DOC number
  • Less than 15 pages
  • Has no aromatic fragrance
  • Well-written with easy to understand statements
  • Written using a pencil or pen
  • Doesn't have any drawings like maps or shapes
  • Doesn't have staples, lipstick markings, pins, or glitters

The facility has a lot of inmates; therefore, ensure to include a return address in case your letter is not received. Use the following format to ensure that your letter reaches the intended individual.
