All About LinkedIn's Terms of Service

LinkedIn is an internet-based network platform that connects professionals to other professionals, provides skill-based training, and assists with recruitment. Individuals create profiles that showcase their skills, and companies use the site to find candidates for job openings. As a result, the company has terms of service for businesses and individuals. The user agreement defines the TOS for individuals using the platform.

LinkedIn's TOS consists of the following:

  • User Agreement
  • Privacy Policy
  • Cookie Policy
  • Copyright Policy

Like most users, you probably automatically check the box that indicates you've read the TOS even when you haven't. Unfortunately, that can have negative repercussions. That's why DoNotPay created an online service that will scan  for violations and potential compensation.

LinkedIn Terms of Service

LinkedIn updated its user agreement, privacy policy, and cookie policy in 2020. The copyright policy has not been updated since 2014. The  cover a broad range of topics, but here are a few highlights.

User Agreement

  has three membership requirements:

  • You must be 16 years of age
  • You must use a valid identity
  • You must not have a restricted account

Users who have been banned cannot create a second profile under a different name. Reasons for restricting accounts are found in Section 8 of the User Agreement and under Rules.

The platform acts as a nonexclusive sublicense for any material submitted to the platform. In that capacity, the company has the right to copy, modify, publish and process your information, including translation services. You retain copyrights to any submissions, but LinkedIn controls it.

Disputes that can not be resolved may be litigated according to the laws of Dublin, Ireland, or the state of California, USA. All litigation must be in person.

Privacy Policy

The platform collects information on an individual in the following ways:

  • At registration
  • From a profile
  • From posts
  • Through uploads
  • When calendars or contacts are synched
  • From partners and affiliates
  • From scanning messages

According to LinkedIn, it collects information to provide a better user experience. They retain the right to keep your data even after your account is closed.

Cookie Policy

LinkedIn uses several tracking technologies, including:

  • Cookies. These are pieces of software that store information that the website can access later. It may contain login information or shopping cart data.
  • Pixel tags. Pixel tags or web beacons track anonymous user movements on a website. They are used to customize the user experience.
  • Device Identifiers. A device ID tells the browser or website the specific device used. Network IDs can show what networks are being used. Some of this information can help with geolocating.
  • Message Scanning. LinkedIn scans all messaging on its platform for specific words, topics, or identifying information.

In some jurisdictions, users may invoke a do not track option; however, LinkedIn does not recognize the request.
