Requesting an Iowa Marriage Certificate Made Easy

Getting married can be complicated and stressful. Between booking a venue, and organizing guest lists, many couples get stressed out during the planning process. After the wedding, things usually calm down. Until it's time to find the marriage certificate

Important documents get lost all the time, and marriage certificates are no exception. Or maybe you need an extra copy of your marriage certificate. In Iowa, getting a certified marriage certificate can be complicated. Luckily, there's an easier way.

What is the Difference Between a Marriage Certificate and a Marriage License?

An Iowa marriage certificate is not the same as an Iowa marriage license. A marriage license gives a person the right to get married. According to US Marriage Laws, an Iowa marriage license:

  1. Has a 3 day waiting period
  2. Does not require a blood test
  3. Requires one witness over the age of 18

An Iowa marriage license gives two people the right to get married in Iowa. According to Brides.com, after the marriage is carried out, it is documented with a marriage certificate. The county will give the couple a copy of the certificate, and keep it on file for their records. To get another copy of the certificate, the couple must go through the county's Vital Records department, according to Iowa.gov

Who Can Get an Iowa Marriage Certificate?

To request a marriage certificate in Iowa, you have to be entitled to the document. The county will request proof that you are entitled to the marriage certificate. Basically they want to know if you have some relationship to the document, to prevent fraud and identity theft. People entitled to marriage certificates are:

  • Either spouse on the marriage certificate
  • The couple's children or grandchildren
  • Siblings
  • The couple's parents or grandparents
  • Either named person's legal guardian or representative

Siblings and legal guardians also have to provide additional proof to the county to show that they are legally allowed a copy of the document.

Once you determine if you are entitled to the document, you can go about requesting it. In Iowa, that means going to the county where the marriage license was issued. That can be complicated and time-consuming. DoNotPay offers an automated solution that is fast, easy, and successful.

How to Order an Iowa Marriage Certificate on Your Own

To request an Iowa marriage certificate, first get these documents together:

  •  A valid photo ID
  • Proof of entitlement. If your name is not on the document, a photo ID will be enough to prove entitlement. If not, you'll need additional documentation, like the birth certificates for yourself and the person whose name is on the document.
  • A check or money order for $15. Make it payable to the Iowa Department of Public Health

Once you have everything ready, determine how you want to request the document.

In Person

While this is the fastest option, you'll need to work around the schedule of your county Vital Records department. In Polk County, for example, you can only request an Iowa marriage certificate in person between 8 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

By Mail

If you mail your request to the Iowa Vital Records department, you'll need to include all your information and make sure you sufficiently identify the document. Include a photocopy of your photo ID and any entitlement documentation you need.

By Telephone

The Vital Records department is available to take requests by phone, but you'll still need to find a way to get them the necessary documentation. That includes your photo ID and payment.

No matter how you are requesting your Iowa marriage certificate, you'll need to pay the $15 fee. Ordering by mail or telephone can take a few weeks. In-person requests should be fulfilled that day, but getting to the county Vital Records department can be a hassle.

Unfortunately, there is no way to request an Iowa marriage certificate online through the Iowa government. Luckily, DoNotPay offers a high-tech solution.
