How Long Does IVA Last On Your Credit Report?

If you've run into debt, you might feel as if you'll never dig your way out. Wondering how long an IVA lasts on your credit report is only natural. It's a very real concern.

The good news is that IVA doesn't stay on your report indefinitely. And the good news doesn't stop there. DoNotPay can provide access to resources that can help you deal with the dilemma you're in.

What Is an IVA and Should I Pursue One?

IVA stands for "individual voluntary arrangement." An insolvency partner will work with you to create a reasonable repayment plan so you can pay your creditors back. This agreement will be formal and legal, hence you and your creditors are bound to abide by it.

How your IVA works will depend on the arrangement you reach with your insolvency practitioner. You can do:

  • Monthly payments
  • Scheduled lump sums
  • A combination of the two

The whole point with an IVA is to work out an arrangement you can afford. However, an IVA will be reflected on your credit rating.

The Pros and Cons of IVA's

An IVA has both advantages and disadvantages for you.

ProsCons
  • You can address your debt through affordable payments.
  • You will have to follow a strict budget         and have limited control over your finances.
  • The payment is fixed and reliable.
  • You will have to pay a set-up fee to the insolvency practitioner.
  • Interest rates and charges cannot be added as they are frozen.
  • You will pay handling fees every time you make a payment.
  • Your debt can be written off.
  • The IVA can be canceled if you don't keep up with your payments.
  • Your assets are protected.
  • The IVA is added to the Individual Insolvency Register.
  • Creditors won’t be able to harass you and you are protected from bailiffs or other legal actions.
  • An IVA will lower your credit score.

You will have to take a look at all your options and decide which choice is best for you.

How Long Does an IVA Last on My Credit Report?

An IVA will stay on your credit report for 6 years.

The six years begin counting down from the date your IVA is approved. It will be removed three months after your IVA is complete. You should not have to do anything to have the IVA removed from your credit report. If you complete your payments, the IVA should be removed on its own.

How to Get Debt Payment Assistance

There is no shame in seeking debt payment assistance. In the UK, you have several options to pursue.

Which relief option is right for you will depend on factors, such as the total amount of your debt. For example:

  • If you owe less than £30,000, you can apply for a Debt Relief Order (DRO).
  • An authorized debt advisor can help you fill in the paperwork and apply for a DRO.
  • You can also access debt help with DoNotPay's Debt Collection feature.
