Hillsborough County, Florida Dog Bite Laws

Florida has a lot of jurisdiction regarding animal safety and protecting the humans that live in communities with the animals. They have a variety of laws that range from mandatory vaccinations for pets to leash ordinances to failure to provide proper care to pets. When it comes to dog bites and the law in Florida, there are two pertinent laws that include the Animals-at-Large Ordinance and the Vicious Animals and Aggressive Dog laws that would apply to reporting dog bites to this Animal Control.

According to Florida law, the statutes on record protect those victimized by dog attacks and can be found in municipal code here. For further investigation, those who have experienced severe injuries or attacks can seek legal remedy. Based on said Florida law:

  1. "If a dog previously declared dangerous attacks or bites a human being or a domestic animal without provocation, in accordance with F.S. § 767.13, as may be amended, the owner is guilty of a criminal offense."
  2. In other words, a dog declared dangerous would result in the owner facing charges. Florida is not a one-bite state.
  3. "The owner shall be responsible for payment of all boarding costs and other fees as may be required to humanely and safely keep the dog during the pendency of any hearing or appeal procedure, as well as any and all investigative fees accrued by the Department."
  4. The owner will be responsible for boarding the pet if the animal is deemed dangerous.
  5. Civil court penalties and procedures may vary.

In suffice, Florida law is comprehensive but may confuse individuals seeking legal remedy for dog bites. It does not automatically include remedy for financial compensation for those needing it, nor does it direct individuals as to which to apply for when seeking justice.
