Am I Registered to Vote in California?

Registering to vote isn't something you have to do very often. Typically, you apply once and do not have to worry about it again as long as you're continuing to vote and keeping the same details. If you're wondering if you’re registered to vote in California, as a resident you can rest assured that checking is easy.

Either check on your details yourself online, or let DoNotPay find the answer for you so you don't have to waste precious time trying to search.

How Can I Check My California Registration Status?

The California Secretary of State website offers voter registration details and information. You can check online as long as you have the following information:

  1. Your legal first name
  2. Your legal last name
  3. Your date of birth
  4. Your California driver's license number
  5. The last 4 digits of your social security number

After you enter these results, your registration status, county office, and other pertinent details should come up. If you're registered, you won't need to worry about it again until your details change. It is not an annual process.

If you do not have a valid driver's license or social security number, you will need to check on your status in the following ways:

  • Visit your county elections office to ask.
  • Send an email to the California S.O.S
  • Call the California S.O.S. at 1-800-345-8683.

Unregistering to Vote in California

If you've discovered that you're registered, but you don't want to be, it's possible to unregister your California voter details. To do so, you must file the California Voter Registration Cancellation Request Form. Provide:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Your date of birth
  • Your CA driver's license number and social security number

The form must be signed and dated to be accepted. Drop it off at your county's election office or send it in the mail. Note that some counties use a P.O. box address instead of their physical address, so be sure you find the appropriate mailing details for your area.

Wait, Why Would I Unregister?

Some people choose to unregister before they move, once they've reached a certain age and no longer wish to vote, or because they're undecided on which party they want to be affiliated with in the future. You can always register again later even if you choose to unregister now.

I'm Not Registered. How Can I Apply?

If you checked on your California registration status and discovered you never actually registered or you've since become inactive, it's time to apply. You can do so online, through the mail, or at your elections office. The online application is available in the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • English
  • Hindi
  • Japanese
  • Khmer
  • Korean
  • Spanish
  • Tagalog
  • Thai
  • Vietnamese

As a Cali Resident, Can I Review My Registration Details?

Yes, it is possible to simply review your voter details and make the appropriate updates. You'll essentially be re-registering with your new information, such as a name change, new address, or different political party affiliation.

Determining Your California Voter Eligibility

You're eligible to vote in California as long as you've maintained residency in the state, have U.S. citizenship, and are 18 or older. As long as you're 16, though, you are able to pre-register.

You may not vote if you've been deemed mentally incompetent or are currently serving time for a felony crime.

CA Voter Registration Deadlines

Remember that there are deadlines for registering as a California voter. Be sure to check on your status or get signed up before the cut-off date if you hope to be heard in the upcoming election. If you fail to apply in time, you will have to wait until the next election to vote.
