Connect With an Inmate—How to Get in Touch With a Loved One at the Alexander Correctional Institution

Located at the heart of Taylorsville, California, Alexander Correctional Institution is a North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) state prison for men. It's essentially a single-cell, close-custody facility consisting of 128 segregation cells, eight medical infirmary beds, and a 252-bed minimum-security unit. Nothing brings us humans close like hearing (or reading) the heartfelt words of a loved one. In this DoNotPay article, we're going to tell you how you can initiate and maintain contact with a loved one at the Taylorsville-based facility (it's nothing you can't do, we promise).

Alexander Correctional Institution Contact Information

We might have mentioned this a while ago, but we don't mind repeating: Alexander Correctional Institution is located in Taylorsville, North Carolina, a 28-minute drive from Newtown and no more than 19.2 miles from Hickory. How to Contact Inmates at Alexander Correctional Institution

If your loved one is currently serving time at the Alexander Correctional Institution and you wish to let them know you think and care about them, you have a few options at your disposal. Each correctional facility has its own rules and regulations regarding communication with inmates, so always check with the staff what is and isn't allowed.

The table below contains the most popular and efficient ways of getting in touch with inmates at the Alexander Correctional Institution.

Can you contact an inmate via:

PhoneYes
EmailNo
TextYes
MailYes (restrictions apply)
In-personYes

Let's look at each of the following communication methods in detail.

Connecting With an Inmate via Phone

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (which governs Alexander Correctional Facility) has contracted GTL to provide phone services to inmates and their loved ones outside of prison.

If an individual wants to purchase phone time (for themselves or an inmate), they may do so using the services offered through ConnectNetwork. ConnectNetwork is GTL's authorized deposit and account management portal.

You have two options to set up or fund a prepaid telephone account with ConnectNetwork:

  • Web Visit www.ConnectNetwork.com to create a prepaid account, add funds to the account, and so much more.
  • Phone Call 1-800-483-8314 to create or add funds to an AdvancePay prepaid telephone account

As for the actual rates, GTL charges 2.5 cents per minute for calls to the Alexander Correctional Facility, a reduction of 5.1 cents per minute from a few years ago. Dollar for dollar, that's one of the cheapest communication rates in the entire country.

Connecting With an Inmate via Mail

This method of contacting inmates at the Alexander Correctional Facility is particularly lengthy. For starters, all mails to offenders must be sent through a private company, TextBehind. You must address mail to offenders in this way, or it will be returned:

Offender Name and OPUS Number (offender's prison ID number)

Prison Name

Prison Street Address or Post Office Box Number

City, State, and zip code of the prison location

Example:

Parker Austin #6756345

Austin Correctional Facility

633 Old Landfill Road

Taylorsville, NC 28681

Here's how TextBehind works:

  1. Address the mail to your loved one and deliver it to TextBehind
  2. TextBehind will make digital copies of the contents.
  3. TextBehind will forward the digital files to the prison (in this case, the Alexander Correctional Facility)
  4. The prison will print acceptable pages and deliver them to your loved one.

You may also download the TextBehind app to send mail by smartphone or a computer. This helps you avoid the hassle and headache of having to go through the U.S. Postal Service. For all the times you reach out via mail, your loved one will continue to receive all acceptable contents—letters, photos, cards, artwork, etc., without restriction.

Connecting With an Inmate In-Person

Most correctional facilities allow inmate visitation, and Alexander is certainly not an exception.

As we speak, visits to the facility are by appointment only. In other words, you need to call the facility to schedule an appointment. To confirm your visitation status, be sure to call the facility a day before the scheduled visit.

During the height of the global pandemic in 2020, visits to the Alexander Correctional Facility were greatly reduced and somewhat restricted. Thankfully, the situation is slowly returning to normal. As of April 1, 2021:

  • Visits by children are allowed again.
  • Visits are no longer limited to 30 minutes.

As you'd expect, there's a thorough frisking process before you're allowed to enter the facility. Cellphones are considered contraband and are prohibited from all prison facilities in North Carolina, Alexander included.
